Practice marketing

Marketing for therapists that doesn't feel like selling

Good practice marketing is mostly being easy to find and easy to understand: the right people see your name when they search, read a page that describes how you work, and know what to do next. We build that around search, because it keeps working after you stop paying attention to it.

Where new clients come from, and what each source costs you

Before spending anything, it helps to see your sources side by side. Most practices draw on some mix of these:

SourceSpeedYou own it?Main cost
Referrals from clinicians and physiciansSteady once builtPartlyYour time
Directory listingsFastNoMonthly fee, shared page
Insurance panel findersFastNoPanel rates
Paid search adsDaysNoPer click, stops when budget stops
Your website in searchMonthsYesWork up front, then upkeep

None of these is wrong. The risk is depending on one you don't control. A directory can change its prices or its ranking rules; a referral source can retire. Search visibility for your own site is slower to build and much harder to take away.

The plan we build for a practice

Search first

Specialty and location pages, a Google Business Profile that is complete and accurate, and links from other sites. This is the core of every plan, described on the SEO for therapists page.

Content that answers what people ask

Articles that answer the practical questions people search before they reach out: what a first session involves, how to choose between a counselor and a psychologist, whether you take their insurance, how telehealth works in your state. We write them; you review every one before it is published, because your name is on it.

A website that converts the visit

If your current site is slow, hard to read on a phone or hides your fees and availability, the traffic we bring leaks away. Website builds start at $400 and are covered on thetherapist website design page.

Directories, used deliberately

We help you decide which listings to keep, make sure they match your site and profile, and write profile copy that sounds like you rather than a template. Free listings on association and local sites often matter more for Google than paid ones.

Referral pages

Physicians, school counselors and other clinicians look you up before they refer. A short page for professionals (who you see, how to refer, how quickly you respond) makes that easy.

Solo practice or group practice

A solo practice usually does best with focus: three to five specialty pages that match the caseload you want, one strong Google profile, and steady links. Silver or Golden covers that.

A group practice is a different job. Every clinician needs an accurate bio page, specialty pages should list the clinicians who actually offer that work, each office needs its own page and profile, and careers pages often matter as much as client pages when you are hiring. The work also has to keep clinicians' pages from competing with each other for the same searches. Platinum or Titanium fits most groups.

Psychologists and licensed counselors have their own codes and their own search patterns; seeSEO for psychologists and SEO for counselors.

What the work looks like elsewhere

A small software company in Washington state shared page one with household names, much as practices share it with national directories. Over two years on Platinum plus content writing, writing for the high-intent searches the big competitors ignored took demo sign-ups from 10 a day to more than 120. Not a practice; the same principle.

A friend recommended them and I'm glad I tried them. The process was simple, the reporting was clear, and I started seeing real traffic after about 6 weeks. Much better than my past SEO agency experience.

Great to work with, especially Joe. He understood all our goals. Even after we decided to bring our SEO in-house because of budget constraints, he still checks in and sends us updates and tips to improve our online presence.

Clients of our team in other industries, quoted with light edits for length. None of them is a therapist or a practice, and we would never ask your clients for testimonials.

Questions about marketing a practice

What is the most effective marketing for a private practice?

For most practices it is a mix: referral relationships, one or two directory listings, and a website that shows up for the specific searches you want. Referrals and directories bring clients sooner; search builds a source you own. Which one deserves the next dollar depends on where your current inquiries come from, so start by asking every new client how they found you.

How much should a therapist spend on marketing?

There is no standard figure. A practical way to decide is to work out what a new client is worth to you, then set a budget you could cover with one or two new clients a month. Our client value calculator does that math with your fee, sessions and average length of stay.

Should I pay for Google Ads instead of SEO?

Ads can bring inquiries in days, but they stop when the budget stops, and health-related ads come with Google policy limits on targeting. SEO is slower and keeps working. Some practices use ads while SEO builds. We don't manage ads, so we have no reason to talk you out of them.

Do you do social media for therapists?

No. Social posts rarely affect search rankings, and posting for a clinician raises boundary questions we would rather leave to you. If you enjoy it, keep it. Our work is the website, the Google profile, directories and links.

Is marketing a therapy practice ethical?

Every major code allows advertising that is accurate and doesn't pressure anyone. The limits are about deception, testimonials from clients, unverifiable claims and solicitation of vulnerable people. Marketing that describes who you help, how you work and what it costs stays well inside those lines.

Do you work with group practices?

Yes. Groups need structure more than volume: clinician pages, specialty pages that list the right clinicians, one profile and page per office, and recruiting pages if you are hiring. Platinum and Titanium are built for that scale.

See where your practice stands, before you spend anything

Send us your website and the searches you care about. Within one business day you get a written review: where you appear today, who holds the spots you want, and what we would do first. No call required.

Please don't include anything about clients or anyone's health. We only need to know about the practice.
