Local SEO for therapists: the map, the profile and the privacy questions

For "therapist near me" and every search like it, Google shows three practices on a map before anything else. Getting into those three depends on a profile set up correctly, a name and address that match everywhere, a website that backs them up, and distance, which nobody controls. We handle the parts that can be handled.

Your Google Business Profile, set up for a practice

A profile is free and it is the single biggest lever for the map results. The usual problems with a practice profile are few and fixable: the wrong primary category, an incomplete services list, hours that don't match the site, no photos, or two listings for the same office that split the signals between them.

What we set up and maintain:

  • The primary category that matches your license and work, and only the secondary categories that are true.
  • Services written the way clients search ("couples counseling", "EMDR", "teen therapy"), with no promises attached.
  • Hours, appointment link, accessibility attributes and the right website page for each profile.
  • Photos of the office and the building entrance, never of clients.
  • Practitioner profiles for clinicians in a group, where it helps and where Google's rules allow it.
  • Removal or merging of duplicate and outdated listings.

Name, address and listings that agree with each other

Google cross-checks your practice against the rest of the web: directories, insurance finders, association listings, local business sites. When they disagree (an old suite number, a former practice name, a phone line you no longer use) the profile loses confidence.

We audit the listings that matter for therapy practices, correct what we can, and build new ones only on sites a client or a referrer might actually use. Citation farms with thousands of empty directories are not part of the plan.

Privacy questions that only therapists have

Seeing clients from a home office

Many solo clinicians see clients at home and don't want that address on a map. A profile still needs a verified address, and hiding it changes how the profile can appear. We lay out the trade-offs before anything is created, and for some practices the right answer is a small staffed office address or no map listing at all.

Reviews

Reviews help local rankings, but most professional codes bar soliciting testimonials from clients, and a careless reply can disclose that someone was in treatment. We don't run review campaigns for practices. We help you write a short, general reply policy and leave every decision about reviews to you.

Photos and posts

Profile photos show the building, the entrance, the waiting area and the office. Posts announce practical things: openings, a new clinician, a group starting, office hours. Nothing that identifies a client.

Telehealth, several offices, and other special cases

Telehealth only. Without a profile, your website carries the whole load. We build pages for the state and the larger cities where you hold a license, written for people looking for online therapy there, and list you in directories that filter for telehealth.

Group practices with several offices. One profile per staffed location, one page per office on the site, consistent naming across all of them, and clinicians tied to the office where they see clients.

Hybrid practices. A profile for the office, plus pages that make clear you also see clients online across the state.

Fees for local SEO

Local work is part of every plan. Golden adds the on-page audit that catches the site problems holding a profile back; Platinum adds competitor analysis, useful when the same two practices hold the map in your town; Titanium covers up to four sites or a multi-office group.

Local results from another licensed profession

Our closest result is a personal injury law firm in Texas: a regulated profession competing in the local map pack. Over five months on the Golden plan, qualified case inquiries rose 500% and the firm reached the top 3 in the map pack. It was a law firm, not a practice; we show it because the local mechanics are the same.

I've worked with different SEO providers for a decade and never expected to find one that lived up to its promises. A friend recommended this team. The reports were detailed and I could actually understand them. Every question got an answer within a day. The results didn't come overnight, but when they came they were what was predicted: steady keyword growth, higher rankings and, most important, more calls from customers.

Adam Moller

A friend recommended them and I'm glad I tried them. The process was simple, the reporting was clear, and I started seeing real traffic after about 6 weeks. Much better than my past SEO agency experience.

Local SEO questions

Can a therapist have a Google Business Profile?

Yes, if you meet clients in person at a location during the hours you list. Google allows a profile for the practice and, in many cases, separate profiles for individual practitioners. Online-only businesses are not eligible, so a telehealth-only practice competes through its website instead.

Which Google Business Profile category should a therapist use?

Pick the primary category that describes what you are, such as Psychotherapist, Psychologist, Counselor, Marriage or relationship counselor, Family counselor or Mental health service. Add secondary categories only where they are true. The primary category carries the most weight, so it is worth choosing carefully.

I see clients in my home office. Do I have to show my address?

Not on your website, and there are options on Google too. A profile has to be tied to a real address for verification, but how it is shown depends on how you serve clients. We go through the choices with you before anything is published, including renting a staffed office address if privacy matters more than the map listing.

How do I reply to a Google review without breaking confidentiality?

Reply in general terms that do not confirm the reviewer was ever a client: thank them, describe your policies, invite them to contact the office. HHS has settled cases with health practices that disclosed patient information in review replies, so never mention details of anyone's care. When unsure, do not reply.

Why does my practice not show in the map results?

Common causes: an unverified or suspended profile, a weak primary category, a hidden address too far from the searcher, a duplicate listing splitting signals, inconsistent names across directories, or a profile linking to a thin homepage. Distance from the searcher is the one factor nobody can change.

How long does local SEO take for a counseling practice?

Profile fixes and category changes can show within a few weeks. Moving into the map results for a competitive search in a city usually takes several months of consistent work on the profile, citations, the website and links. Smaller towns tend to move faster.
